Holding Eric part 3

Everything around was strange being high above looking down cars able to see right inside, bending over tilted looking outward thru a small window built in the door, Eric watching him shifting gears following each movement clicking a button on the side without even looking at it, Hanging cord from a CB mic tangled above them Eric note the dial on sixteen, “How come your not on nineteen?” pointing at it
“Truckers are mostly staying on sixteen less mumbo jumbo” Glancing over looking at his hat
“Nebraska that’s where you’re going right’ how far is that from Denver?”
“A few miles away you asked me already before” Watching Eric looking in the back
“I did sorry just wondering” Eric said sitting back looking out the front window
“So you have a Name?”
“Eric what’s yours?”
“Jacob’ your dad really a truck driver?” Checking his mirror moving to another lane
“No he works in a warehouse when he’s not drinking” Checking the street sign to and exit
“So Eric why you on the run?”
Eric quickly turning “No I’m not on the run’ just going to my Aunts that all” looking down at the door handle and next to the seat.
“There’s coffee in the thermoset in the back if you want some’ the cream color one regular”
Eric seeing the thermos sitting next to the bed, looking upward able to standup looking around at the small area picking it up returning to his seat “No cups?”
“Use the top’ I’ve got other one don’t worry, should be still hot”

Ms. Waterford walked into the police station walking right by the desk to Thomas Hall’s desk sitting down looking at him and his partner, “Ms. Waterford we can’t do anything like I told you on the phone”
“There must be something Eric’s only eleven years old”
“If he’s spotted will call” officer Nolan said placing his hand on the phone looking over his desk
“He’s a runaway, we have lots of runaways he’s just one more on the list” Thomas said sitting backwards in his chair watching Nolan looking thru folders, Thomas looked down at the flyer of Eric ‘This the only photo you have?” Setting it aside
“Thomas this boys different than the normal runaways he’s been thru a lot the past few years” Ms. Waterford said getting up from her chair looking at the two of them going over another folder
“There all different’ he’ll come home when he’s ready or when he’s hungry” Nolan said slapping the folders down looking right at Ms. Waterford walking away from the desk to another part of the room
“Eric father’s is being charged with Maggie’s death’ when the boy shows up then we can do something about it, so like I said until he’s spotted our hands are tied”
“You will check with his Aunt in Denver?” Holding her briefcase resting on the desk asking
“Yes we’ll check with The Aunt if anything comes up will call you” going right back looking at his folder
Ms. Waterford turn walking away to the front desk, looking at everyone moving around not even paying attention who was around the front heading outside to her car, heading back to her office sitting at her desk pulling the file out of her brief case looking at Eric’s folder again reaching for the phone.
“Hello is this Mrs. Augustine?”
“Yes can I help you?” Turning down the radio in the kitchen trying to hold the phone
“Mrs. Augustine this is Ms. Waterford Family protection services in Road Island”
“Yes what has my Sister done this time?”
“I’m calling you about your sister and about Eric” checking who was walking by her door
“What’s happen that your calling me I’m in Denver what’s she done now?”
“Well it about Eric he’s run away and might be headed to Denver”
“Here’ why what happen is my sister ok?”
“No your sister’s in the hospital”
“Hospital’ did he get drunk again I warn my sister about him before she just won’t listen” sitting down at the table holding her soda looking to the other room of photos on the wall “Is she ok?”
“No didn’t anybody call you? She had a brain hemorrhage and they did everything they could I’m sorry to have to tell you or the phone”
“What Maggie is dead?”
“I’m so sorry”
“O’ my god Maggie no it can’t be I just talked to her yesterday” Setting the phone down on the table holding her head low trying not to cry, wiping the tears away hearing Ms. Waterford
“Hello Mrs. Augustine you still there Mrs. Augustine?”
“Yes’ yes I’m still here” holding the phone inbetween crying
“Eric doesn’t know about his mother he ran away before she died”
“Was Eric hurt is he ok when did all this happen?”
“We don’t know what happen only he did have some bruises when he show up at his friend’s house”
“How bad was it and what happen to Jack?”
“Jack being charged with involuntary manslaughter”
“You said Eric’s on the run trying to get here?”
“Yes as far as we were told by his friend before he took off”
“What about Maggie I can be on the next plane”
“Mrs. Augustine there’s not much here that can be done right now’ you need to be there for Eric when and if he shows up”
“I’ve got to go’ I’ll call you later”
“My condolences to you please call back as soon as you’re able you have my number?”
“Yes I have the number I’ll I will thank you for calling” Holding the phone in her hand hanging it up lowering into it crying.
While Eric woke up looking around seeing he was pulling into a rest stop “We stopping?”
“Need to stretch a little you can go look around if you want” Stopping the truck shutting down the engine reaching for his log book, writing inside it.
“You always write in that book when you stop?”
“It’s called a log book, keeps track of the miles and time”
“That’s what you have an odometer for and a watch for”
“Totally different altogether’ look why don’t you go visit the restrooms and walk around a little you’ve been sleeping over five hours” placing the log book back over the visor opening his door, looking at Eric just sitting watching him. “You might as well get out for a while” climbing down walking in the front seeing Eric getting down
“You going up” Eric asked
With a nod yes the two headed up to the restrooms, Eric stopped at the big map looking at it, checking around seeing him going inside, Eric hurry behind him “Hey were headed the wrong way this is South not west?” Eric said standing at the sink looking at him.
“Making a stop here then will be heading out”
“Where going the wrong way Denver the other way” Eric turn away heading back outside checking the cars parked out front.
“Eric come over here a second”
Turning around seeing Jacob looking at the map Eric headed over standing next to him pointing down “Here is where we turn to heading towards Denver can you see now why?”
Eric with a sly sign ok following him back, watching him again walking around it checking the tires “You do that everytime you stop check every tire why?” walking with Jacob to the other side
“Making sure there ok so we don’t end up with rubber flying off”
“Why don’t you get tires that don’t fly off?”
“Because they don’t make tires like that for truck traveling long hauls”
“Seems they should so you don’t have to stop and check them all the time”
“Your right someday maybe, you ready to hit the road?”
“No my turn’ you’re not going to leave me here are you?”
“No I’ll wait for you’ don’t be all day” Jacob said climbing in reaching for his log book.
Eric rush off to the restrooms hurry inside, one older man standing looking back at him, Eric stood trying not to look at him washing his hands looking over, Staying still even after he finished as the man just stood by the sink watching him. Turning starting to head out when the Man said” You’re not going to wash?” Eric shook his head and walked around the wall hurry back to the truck area, looking behind him seeing the man following him, Eric darted down the side of one truck hurry to the end stopping looking back seeing he drop his hat debating about going back for it not seeing him, just as he turn around the man stood looking at him “Going somewhere?” Eric backup into the trailer as the man got closer standing right in front of him holding one hand on the trailer just above his head “So kid what you doing around here?” Eric closed his eyes for a second waiting for his next move when all of a sudden the man was pulled back away by Jacob “what do you think you’re doing get out of here before I cream you” He took off running around the front while Eric stood with one tear looking up “Eric you have to be careful’ you ok he didn’t” “No can we go?” “Come on” Jacob said placing his arm around Eric wiping his tear off keeping his head down picking up his hat walking back to the truck together.

Homing Eric part 2

Jerry sat looking at him “You can spend the night here”
“What about you’re Mom?’
“She won’t come in don’t worry”
“You have anything to eat tonight?”
“No left in a hurry”
“I’ll get you something what would you like?”
“It doesn’t matter whatever you can fine”
“Chicken sandwich sound ok?”
“Sure”
Jerry headed to the kitchen while Eric made himself comfortable on the bed laying back checking out his book setting on the night stand, Jerry came in with a plate and soda handing it to Eric, “Thanks’” biting into the sandwich holding the plate, Jerry open the dresser draw pulling out a box placing it on the bed sitting down just as Eric finished giving him back the empty plate flipping the soda tab open.
“What’s in the box?”
Jerry handed the box to Eric, slowly opening it looking inside seeing dollar bill stacked inside with a rubber band holding them, “What’s this?” Jerry waved his hand towards him “What it’s your money I can’t take your money”
“You’ll need it, its ok” Jerry said taking the empty box back holding it
“I have money almost forty five dollars” Flipping the bills with his finger
“Take it for your trip you’ll need it for a bus ticket and food”
“They won’t sell me one because of my age” looking down at the rubber band snapping it
“So take it anyway”
Eric set the money on the night stand “Thanks’ Jerry you’re a real friend”
“You tired or you want to stay up for a while?”
“Little bit’ where you want me?”
“The bed”
“What both of use sleeping here in one bed?”
“No I’ll sleep over here I’m good”
Eric laid back down finishing off the soda watching Jerry spread out a blanket on the chair ready to turn off the light looking over “Night see you in the morning” clicking the light off.
Eric laid back looking at the ceiling than to Jerry already bundled under his blanket leaning on his arm, placing both arms up and under his head Eric slowly fell asleep.
“Wake up Wake up Eric she here come on you got to get out of here” Jerry pushing on his arm waking him “Eric hurry get your things” Eric quickly putting his sneakers on looking over to his pillow case tying his laces, hearing the door opening they looked over seeing Jerry’s mother and Ms. Waterford standing in the doorway.
“Hello Eric”
Eric just bowed his head getting up, Jerry already walking to the door as his Mother only fingered him out, Ms. Waterford stepped inside “Eric you’ll be fine now you’ll have a good family and they waiting to meet you” Eric could only follow her back into the livingroom seeing Jerry sitting on the couch with his mother standing over him, he knew Jerry was in trouble but had to find a way out of this.
“I’ll be right back got to use the old head ok?”
Ms. Waterford gave him a nod to go ahead walking in sitting down in the chair waiting for Eric to return holding her briefcase started talking to Jerry and his mom, Eric headed for the bathroom looking at the back door it was too open she could see him from the chair, entering the bathroom locking the door behind him and right over to the window opening it looking around, with a boost up on the laundry basket falling inside sliding outside hands first to the ground, looking back to the window hearing someone knocking, with a quick look around rushing to the back trees hiding just inside looking back watching Ms. Waterford looking out the window for him.
Hurrying thru the trees getting back on the train tracks where it was safe away from cars Eric walking another five mile this time near the truck stop hearing the trucks on the highway this was his only chance to get a ride out of town before they found him, walking among the trucks looking them over for out of state plates towards the restaurant area, going inside sitting at the counter looking them over hoping with his ball cap the waitress might think he was with them sitting in the truck area.
“Morning what do you have coffee or soda?”
“Coffee good any Hard roll’s?”
“Sure want it toasted?”
“Ok” Looking over to a few guys sitting in a booth talking
Seeing a trucker magazine on the next stool checking out the pages only looking up to the waitress setting the coffee down before walking away, reaching over for three sugar pack stirring them in when she brought over his roll “So where you guys headed today?” She asked
“Denver” trying not to look up just glancing to the entrains way
“Long trip ahead of you must be nice riding with your dad”
Snapping right up “Oh yea a blast sitting all day” picking up the roll
“Well if you need anything just wave”
“Ok thanks’” Eric said watching her checking the other drivers seeing if they needed more coffee taking the empty plates back, finishing off his roll dipping the last part in coffee checking the drivers.
Taking the magazine and check leaving a dollar by the plate walking to the cashier, standing looking around for someone to take his money, setting a dollars and fifty cents on the bill leaving on the counter walking into the store area looking around at the CB sets, turning looking to the counter and walking over checking out the candy bars line under it, taking three setting them on the counter.
“That do it for you?”
“Sure any maps?”
“Over by the restrooms”
Glancing over and back looking at the register price placing the money on the counter for her, taking his change and candy headed to the truck fuel pay station, seeing a few standing at the counter watching the news above them, Eric looked at the trucker magazines and keep his own rolling it up sticking it in his back pocket walking out side standing by the door checking out the trucks getting fuel.
One by one truck driver walking inside and back out while Eric lean on the rail watching them eating his candy bar. “You need a ride?” Looking over seeing an older man looking at him.
“Waiting on my dad’ were you headed?”
“West”
“So are we Denver”
“What load you hauling?”
Not sure crumbling the wrapper “Boxes of hanger”
“I’m in the green Peterbuilt if you’re looking for a ride” walking off
Eric looked around then started towards the trucks walking down a few then spotted him again checking his tires “What part west you going?” asking him
“Nebraska”
“Oh that’s how far from Denver?”
“Not far’ you need a ride don’t you?” watching Eric nodding his head “get in give me a few here and will be heading out’ you’re not wanted for anything are you?”
“No just need to get to Denver” Eric said watching him swat at the tires jumping back each time
“Go boy get in before someone see you”
Eric hurry around the side looking up at the handle not sure if he should go, when seeing a hand reaching around him opening the door “Jump up” Eric climb inside sitting looking over the front watching him walking around to the door getting in, holding his magazine looking over as he wrote in a small book only glancing at him a few times letting the motor run “What’s in Denver?” he asked
“My Aunt she lives there”
“So heading to your Aunts’ how long you been on the run?” placing the book over his visor checking the gages, Eric not sure if he should make a dash for it “Well I know what it’s like don’t worry I’ll get you closed to her” Eric smiled at him taking a slower breath looking around the yard as the stared pulling out.

Holding Eric

Following along the Railroad tracks just to get away from all the hassles of home, it was too much with everyone fighting back and forth he just tired of hiding coving his ears not to hear them fighting anymore, that would only hold out just so much no matter how hard holding the pillow around his head the sounds were overwhelming, getting up from the bed tossing the pillow aside looking around his dim room, gathering a few clothes looking for something to put them in, only empty the pillow out placing what he needed inside stopping only as the hollering got closer to his bedroom door.

Sitting on the bed looking at the floor this was it the last time placing both hands over his ears trying to block the fighting, glancing at the window lowering his hands with a quick look around the room picking up his pillow case, slowly opening the window making sure they didn’t hear the metal sliding up before climbing out, just as Eric climbed out hearing a knock at the front door already knowing it must have been the police again it wasn’t the first time they came knocking.

Looking inside the window waiting for them to stop long enough to answer the door another knock without them stopping screaming at each other, hearing someone telling them to stop this worked both were quite hearing a car pulling up ducking down so they didn’t see him watching the officer going to the front, no lights or sirens to draw attention getting back up to the window only in time to hear them telling them that one of them was going to jail this time, everything went quite inside hearing a scuffle going on inside with his father yelling again before hearing his mother also another scuffle before it went quite again, leaning in the window waiting to see who they were going to take this time with another car approaching having to duck down looking over it was that Lady again the big shot social worker Mrs. Waterford, “Oh crap it’s her again” now was not the time to hang around she said last time’ she was taking me in if this happen again.

Eric headed away from the house hiding next store watching from the porch, seeing his parents taken away in separate cars leaving another officer there with the social worker, after ten or more minuets’ closing the front door before looking around outside of the house, ending up back at their cars talking to each other while Eric stay still keeping low out of sight knowing they were looking for him, watching them leaving slowly heading down the street checking making sure before walking back around the house to his window, finding it was closed and lock on the top going around the back door finding they also locked it kicking the door out of frustration, Eric never had a key to the front door always used the rear when coming or going anywhere, turning his head hearing the train going thru town grabbing his pillow case taking the alleyway behind the houses not to get spotted heading towards town.

Walking along the sidewalk in town holding his pillow sack in front like he was going to the laundry mat only a few blocks away watching every car going by before reaching the laundry mat going inside it was a safe place at the moment, with only a few inside Eric set the pillowcase down on the chair walking over to the soda machine getting a soda watching the outside keeping to himself returning to the chairs sitting down.

“Plenty of machine for you take your pick” Said one lady pulling clothes from a washer looking over

“That’s ok thanks’ waiting on my Mom” looking up watching her

“You have enough quarters” placing the last of her clothes in the basket

“She getting some thanks”

“Going to be dark soon seems to be getting dark earlier and lately”

“It’s the weather changing makes it darker”

“Colder too’ She coming soon?”

“She should be here already’ I don’t know what’s keeping her” getting up looking outside

“You want I could wait with you till she comes?”

“No maybe I should go check”

“Ok you have a good night now”

“You too good night”

Eric said still watching the window going back over getting his pillow case, heading out side looking down the street and back no police cars, seeing the lady putting in laundry inside her car turning asking “You need a ride?”

“No I’m good’ I’ll be ok thanks”

“Ok becareful”

Eric walking a little faster seeing the Railroad sign just ahead holding his sack over his shoulder started heading down the tracks staying out of view till the bend, his Aunt Ginger in Denver would take him in she liked him a lot and always said “Anytime you want to move in with me you can” Eric would kept his emotions shut down, and only on certain occasions would he actually reveal what he felt and that was to his Aunt she knew what was going on and could not do anything to change it.

Aunt Ginger’s was a long trip to be making without coasting an arm and leg for a bus ride, what Eric had scraped to collect a mere forty-five dollars from mowing lawns over the summer wouldn’t even cover the ticket maybe Jerry could help hurry along the tracks staying stepping on every other rail board when he could a few times trying the rail, stopping seeing the old building off in the woods with the moon light shining on one square pane of glass reflecting to him, Eric headed over to check it out hoping it was a good place to spend the night, tall over grown weeds covering the windows over the years setting his sack down on the short porch looking inside, weeds had taken over the inside thru the rotted floor boards turning back around looking to the trees before sitting on the few boards still left on the porch.

Eric stood outside the house looking thru the window hoping to spot Jerry watching TV, not seeing him noticing the wall clock it was late already ten twenty Jerry would have already gone to bed, around the side looking to his window hurrying over seeing the light was still on, with a tap seeing Jerry on his bed reading Jerry perked up looking over seeing him.

“What are you doing out there?”

“Going to Denver”

“Gees Eric go to the back door”

Eric headed around the back Jerry already holding the door open waving him in, “hurry my room” Jerry said watching Eric going in, checking to make sure his parents were still watching TV returned closing  the door looking at Eric “What happen not your folks again?” sitting on the bed next to him.

“This time both went to jail”

“Your worker called here early looking for you”

“Man’ see wants to put be in some foster home or something”

“Mom told her she hadn’t seen you in a few days but would call when you showed up”

“Good thing I didn’t knock on the door then”

“That’s for sure so what you going to do now?”

“Head to my Aunt’s”

“Denver that’s what a billion miles away?”

“I can’t stay here’Waterford, I can get a ride at the truck stop”

Working on this new story hope you like it so far. Will
